There is also the need to for all stake holders in a community to build strong social networks which will help in reducing the stigma of people suffering with various mental conditions and help other members of the community to accept those individuals. By making them feel loved and accepted, then the community becomes healthier and more vibrant.
Mental hospitals also need to be well equipped in the provision of improved mental services which helps in building confidence for those who seek services at the centers. The staff should be professional and hospitable and there is need to hold various initiative support programs which sensitize community members on various mental conditions and management of other psychological conditions.
The youth need much support to enable them cope with various challenges which they face today, one of them being unemployment. Many unemployed youth today have resulted to various anti-social behaviors such as drug abuse. There is need to make them feel part of the society and to provide institutions which can mold them to become responsible people in the society.
Encouraging Positive Mental Attitudes in the Society
One of the most embarrassing moments that a lady can go through is to be harassed by a group of rowdy youth in the neighborhood. That happened to me some years back when I was going home after a busy day at work. While passing the group of youths, some whom I knew and had seen growing up, I felt really embarrassed as they mocked and made fun of me. I was so irritated, to an extent of contemplating taking legal action against them.
However, upon reaching home, I realized that as a member of the society, I was obligated in helping them. Legal action wasn’t the best solution for such youth. It wouldn’t eradicate the bad behavior which had of late cropped up among the youth, most of whom had finished school but were yet to secure a job. I felt that there was a need for the community to do something to help them.
Having worked as a social worker for long, I knew that most of these kids were being traumatized. There was a feeling of rejection in them coupled by the lack of employment, they felt really awful. They were kind of stressed and there was a possibility that they were being influenced by what they see on TV or could even have started doing drugs.
I didn’t know where to start in my endeavors to help them. Therefore, I sought further consultation from my fellow church members and the church leaders. We needed to come up with a strategy which could help our youth. The church was positive and earnestly made consultations with other institutions in the community. We held various meetings to strategize the best way forward.
Giving Hope to the Youth in the Community
We started by identifying the anti-social behaviors that some of the youths had resulted into. Smoking was one, doing drugs, a possibility of engaging in reckless sexual activities, disobedience among others. We were certain that some of them could have been stressed up by life while could have given up on life. We needed to bring hope to them as much as we needed to equip them with better ways of being useful in the society.
We made consultations with the department of sports, culture and heritage and sought of various ways to bring the youth together through cultural forums. In these forums, we wanted to help the kids identify their various talents, gifts and mentor them into using them to lead a responsible life. Various cultural forums and talent shows were held over the next months. We encouraged them to participate and come up with something unique by rewarding those who exhibited ingenuity in the various quests. The rewards motivated them, and soon many would spend time preparing for the next project rather than idle.
We also had to deal with various issues such as smoking. This called up for setting up a counseling unit to help them. Those who volunteered were helped by professionals who counseled them and helped them quit smoking. It was a lengthy process, but majority were gave it a try and succeeded. There were rewards to for such individuals. We also financed to rehabilitate those who had been involved in drugs. To get them to volunteer for the rehab services, we held vigorous campaigns to sensitize them on the dangers of drugs and the need to go to the rehabs to help them quit.
We also set up various counseling units and employed various professionals to help the youth manage stress and other psychological issues facing them. There they were given hope and encouraged to take positive steps in life. Most of these programs are still running to date and they have greatly helped the youth to take control of their lives.
